Happy End - part one [12.09.2009]

Hey folks,

after traveling around the globe for five years you will hear the details about the Happy End - part one today. As you might remember, last year in London I asked Carolina to become my wife. She said yes and a couple of weeks ago there was the first step of becoming a family. We had the civil marriage in a little castle in my hometown. This was the first part of the big Happy End, because again in a couple of weeks we will have the religious wedding coming up in Brazil.

Just before the wedding the Brazilian part of my family proved once again to be very spontaneous and so Carolina's mother and grandmother decided to join the wedding. Of course we were very happy to have them here with us and it got almost even better, because two days (!) before the wedding Carolina's father decided that he wanted to join the wedding, too. Unfortunately there weren't any flights available anymore. Sometimes planing things ahead isn't so bad.

Anyway, having Carolina's mother and grandmother over was kind of interesting as they hardly spoke English and obviously no German. Knowing that my family hasn't learned much portuguese yet, you can imagine what interesting conversations we had. Especially when we - the translators - weren't around.

The night before the wedding my family organised a traditional party. A lot of my friends from home came and celebrated with us the last 'unmarried' day. This party is called 'Polterabend' in Germany and the interesting thing is that every guest has to bring something made of porcelain. But the guests do not only have to bring something, they also have to break it. All the broken pieces in front of the house mean good luck for the couple. We should have a lot of luck according to that.

The party was great, because somebody invited a jester who looked like from mediaeval times. He was very funny and made everybody laugh. After that my little cousin organised a raffle with very funny prices. Prices like 'a moving night' turned out to be laxative. Pictures from the Polterabend are here:

Polterabend

The night between Polterabend and the wedding was very short. The wedding was to start at 12. In the morning around 8 I left and went to my uncle's place, because I was not allowed to see Carolina in her wedding dress. Strangely I wasn't nervous at all until my uncle gave me some booze. There I started to get a little nervous.

In the castle I had to wait a little bit for Carolina to come in. It wasn't her fault as she was already there, but some guests were delayed. When she finally entered I was stunned - she looked gorgeous. I couldn't dream of a girl prettier than her that day! To make this day a successful one we both decided not to change our mind and said yes. The registrar held a very emotional speech that moved everybody. She was very good. After the ceremony my older female cousin caught the bouquet even though my younger cousins tried it, too.

From the castle we went to a restaurant, were the two of us had to saw a tree trunk. This is another German tradition. The couple has to show that they are able to solve problems together. We managed that! After having lunch we took a ride with a toy train in our city. There we got our wedding cake and my brother - a baker - thought of something very special. On top of the cake was a heart with the German flag and in the middle of that "German heart" was a Brazilian flag. Carolina and I absolutely loved it. The train ride lasted one hour and we went back by an oldtimer bus. Apart from being tired we really enjoyed the bus ride. Pictures of the wedding are here:

Wedding

This was the end of the part we did with the entire group, because in the evening Carolina and I used a wedding gift one of my former clients gave me. And so we had a candle-light-dinner in his hotel with the wedding night in a luxurious suite. It was amazing.

Now I'm looking forward to fly to Brazil again and see my wife. Carolina returned two weeks after the wedding to prepare the wedding in Brazil. After the religious wedding in Recife she will come with me to Germany and move here.

All the best to you guys!!!

Patrick

Hey Patrick..
The pictures look great and the two of you look absolutely amazing. I wish you the very best and pray that you have a very very happy married life.
Just one thing though, maybe you should change the title to "A Happy Beginning", the "End" sounds very ominous.. :)
As such, i believe one of the best parts of your journey is just starting now..
Best wishes my friend..
